For the majority of the energetic action the Central Alberta Amazons and Lethbridge Jr. Eagles remained matched shot for shot, caught in a deadlock at zero during Junior A Female league play Nov. 17.
With less than 13 minutes left on the Penhold Regional Multiplex clock Irma, Alta. native Cassidy Holt fought her way into the offensive corner, snapping a quick shot on goal.
鈥淪he outworked the other girl to get to the puck first in the corner,鈥� said Amazons head coach Doug Demott. 鈥淪he just threw the puck toward the net, got a lucky break and it went in.鈥�
Charissa Kadar scored the game winner with help from Mackenzie Demott and Kaisha Coleman, launching the puck over the left shoulder of netminder Emilia Noble, off the post and in.
鈥淲e got some dirty goals,鈥� Demott said. 鈥淲hen you're in a bit of a slump you've gotta keep the game simple and the girls did that.鈥�
Keith Hitchcock, head coach of the Lethbridge squad, was quick to admit the Amazons deserved the 鈥淲.鈥�
鈥淚 think the right team won tonight,鈥� he said. 鈥淭hey wanted it more than we did for the third period of the game.鈥�
Though Eagles captain Jil Olson managed to squeak a late one by home team goalie Emily Olson, it was too little too late.
鈥淲e played really well for the last two minutes of the game,鈥� Hitchcock said. 鈥淭hey were behind in the standings at one time. We'd taken two games away from them. They needed this game and they earned it.鈥�
The Amazons stand at a 7-5 record for the season so far. Their next match is against the Fort Saskatchewan Fury at the Penhold Regional Multiplex on Nov. 24 with the puck dropping at 5:30 p.m.
