Kayaking enthusiasts who are waiting for winter to end might want to check out the Cottonwood Kayak Club's kayak polo tournament on Feb. 4.

Julie Ramrattan of the club explained kayak polo is "kind of cross between soccer and basketball." She said players can only hold the ball for five seconds and must try and get the ball in the net. The tournament will be held at the Innisfail pool.

The tournament is a recreational one and Ramrattan said anyone's welcome to register and try the sport out.

"We make teams from whoever shows up," she said.

Last year the tournament attracted people from all over the province, including some elite players.

"Last year we had some of the national team come," Ramrattan said.

All ages who are ready to play are welcome, though Ramrattan said the youngest paddler who plays is 11. Last year before the main tournament the younger kids got to play a game so they too could participate.

"We had a fun little tournament," Ramrattan said.

Those who are worried they aren't skillful enough to play against the likes of national team members don't need to be concerned 帽 Ramrattan said the teams are created on the day with different age groups and skill levels being divide amongst the different teams.

Those who've never even played kayak polo can play at the tournament if they are willing to try.

"It might be a bit scary for them," Ramrattan said.

The sport is fun but Ramrattan said it can get a little crowded and rough in the pool.

About eight teams participated last year. They play approximately four or five paddlers a side due to the size of the pool.

"We had quite a good turnout," Ramrattan said. She said there is a core of about 10 local kayakers who come out.

The cost to participate will be decided soon. Ramrattan is hoping people will pre-register for the event but they can show up and register on the day of the tournament.

The day runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Ramrattan said for those coming to watch the games probably won't start until about 10 a.m.

"We'd love spectators," Ramrattan said.

Those who have equipment should bring it, including their kayak, a helmet, lifejacket, a deck and paddles. Ramrattan said those without equipment can be likely be accommodated with some supplies from the club.

"We do have some equipment," Ramrattan said.
