OLDS — The Olds Grizzlys host the Lloydminster Bobcats at the Sportsplex Wednesday night after a loss on the weekend.
Then they’re on the road on Valentine’s Day for a date with the Canmore Eagles before returning home to host the Calgary Canucks Saturday night, 7 p.m. at the Sportsplex.
“Lloydminster will be a good match-up for us on Wednesday and we owe both Canmore and Calgary better games than the last one,” Grizzlys head coach Brad Tobin wrote in a text.
In Camrose on Saturday, two goals in the second period deprived the Old Grizzlys of a chance for a win against the Kodiaks.
There was no scoring by either team in the first period.
Those two Kodiaks at 6:20 and 10:26 of the second frame gave Camrose a 2-0 lead.
But the Grizzlys didn’t fold.
Instead, Jack Bouck scored his first goal in the black and gold only 15 seconds into the third period, unassisted, to get the Grizzlys on the scoreboard.
Then Aiden Knutsen scored his third at 1:32 of the third to tie the score at 2-2, assisted by Keil Schmalz and Nolan Viesner.
Former Grizzly Avery Trotter put the Kodiaks back in the lead at the 3:19 mark.
Jonathan Doucette tied the score for the Grizzlys once again with his 11th of the season, a powerplay goal, assisted by Airdrie call-up Jordin St. Louis and Hunter Motley.
However, the Kodiaks scored two more goals to put the game away, the last of which was not only an empty-netter, but also a shortie.
Ben Dardis played the entire game in net for the Grizzlys, stopping 39 of 44 shots he faced. The Grizzlys sent 22 shots at Kodiaks puck stopper Wilson Maxfield.
The Grizzlys were 1/5 on the powerplay. The Kodiaks were 1/6.
“I thought it was a good game for us,” Tobin wrote. “(We) got into some penalty trouble early, then kept it tight throughout the rest of the game.
“(A) couple of bounces go our way and we’re walking out of there with a win.”
