The Olds skatepark officially opened on Saturday with dozens of youth showing up with their bikes and boards to christen the facility.
In opening the park, Mayor Judy Dahl said much credit for the park's design is owing to users who gave feedback on what they wanted to see to the builders of the park, NewLine Skateparks.
鈥淭he park is designed 100 per cent from the users here in Olds. All elements incorporated were requests from the youth,鈥� she said.
The design of the park was intended to make Centennial Park a family-friendly place, noted Dahl.
Richard Marz, MLA for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills, said he encouraged all youth to take advantage of the park and thank the people who made the $400,000-facility happen.
鈥淭hese things just don't happen. It takes a lot of planning and it takes a lot of money and a lot of partners involved. Enjoy your park and happy landing,鈥� he said.
Al Kemmere, speaking on behalf of Mountain View County council, said when the county was initially approached for its contribution, he wasn't sure what to expect, but he said the result fits well with Centennial Park.
鈥淚t's an amenity to the park, it's not just a feature here,鈥� he said.
Brent Boutwell, on behalf of the Knights of Columbus, said through the dedication of member Art Vondette, the community was able to raise $80,000 toward the construction.
鈥淚t was definitely a community-based program,鈥� he said, noting that the 鈥渓egacy鈥� should serve the community for many years to come. 鈥淲e're just so proud to be a part of this.鈥�
One of the dozens of users who turned out for the event, Mikel Flinn, said he appreciated all the efforts that went into making the park what it is.
鈥淥n behalf of all the skaters, we really love this park and 鈥� have a good time,鈥� he said.
Another user, Justin Clarke, said while he likes the park, it can sometimes be discouraging with others not making it an inviting place to hang out. But overall, he said he likes spending time at the facility.
鈥淚 think it's fun. It can be disappointing sometimes, but (overall) it's fun,鈥� he said.
