Penhold 24-hour hockey game helps raise cancer funds

For some, three periods of ice hockey a day might be enough. But when it comes to raising money for the Kids Cancer Care Foundation, a local fundraiser plans to have players hitting the ice for 24 hours.

For some, three periods of ice hockey a day might be enough.

But when it comes to raising money for the Kids Cancer Care Foundation, a local fundraiser plans to have players hitting the ice for 24 hours.

The 24-hour hockey game is returning to Penhold after raising over $3,000 last year for the cause. Organizer Trevor Jenner said the event starts at noon Sept. 15 and runs until noon Sept. 16.

鈥淚'm looking for about two more teams,鈥 Jenner said. The event will see multiple teams facing off over the day, playing in a round-robin format for 鈥渂ragging rights鈥 at the end.

Jenner said there's no trophy to help 鈥渒eep the real reason鈥 driving the event at the forefront.

Jenner's hoping spectators will come out to support the players in their efforts.

鈥淚t's a family event,鈥 he said. The games will be in the Penhold Regional Multiplex. There are plans for a silent auction, 50/50 draw, a bouncy castle and a mobile unit of Bears & Wishes on hand.

Volunteers to help run the event and 鈥渇ree-agent鈥 players willing to be on any team short participants are also needed.

鈥淓ach player's going to pay $60 to play,鈥 Jenner said. That money can be raised through pledges or just paid by the player. 鈥淲e encourage them to raise more.鈥

For those thinking of hitting the ice, Jenner said they're going to try and schedule three-hour breaks between games, though there will be some back-to-back sessions. There will also be an hour-long break in the day where they'll hold a skills competition.

To volunteer, sign up to play or for more information, call Jenner at 587-877-9953 or email him at [email protected]. Landon Ames can also be contacted at 403-872-3080.

鈥淗opefully we get a good turnout,鈥 Jenner said. The Penhold Fall Festival and Fair is also running that weekend, starting the evening of Sept. 14 and continuing Sept. 15, for those who want to check out both events.
