Sundre High School Grade 11 music composer Sydney Reimer says she writes songs she hopes will give listeners a chance to make his or her own interpretation, to find their own meaning in her music and words.
鈥淚 write to get my feelings and thoughts on paper,鈥� said Reimer, who will debut her latest composition, 鈥淚nvisible鈥� at this week's Showcase 2011 at the Arts Centre May 25 and 26. 鈥淚 look for inspiration in anything that would inspire people to take action, give them hope or make them think.
鈥淎fter you write it you never know what people will think. Everyone takes something different out of the song. They can make their own interpretation of the words. I leave it open ended, not mentioning every detail so people can make their own interpretation.鈥�
Reimer wrote and performed a song called 鈥淗old On Tight鈥� for last year's Remembrance Day ceremony. She will be performing another original song, called 鈥淧ossibilities鈥�, at graduation desert nights in Sundre and Caroline.
Themes for her songs include everything from political issues to the plans and aspirations of her fellow students.
She explained that she started writing songs last year and has really taken to it since. Especially after the Young Songwriters Intensive she participated in. She usually writes the music first on her piano and comes up with lyrics to match.
鈥淲riting a song helps me de-stress,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t's a way for me share my personal experiences and just relax and enjoy my talent.鈥�
Reimer explained that she has been offered a chance to record a demo CD of her songs under the direction of former Sundre student Emily Lamb. She hopes to have that project completed sometime next school year.
When she graduates from Sundre High, Reimer plans to possibly pursue a degree in Psychology with a minor in music.
