Sundre U9 Huskies’ home tourney hailed 'a fantastic success'

Lee Martineau says 2024-25 has “been nothing short of remarkable”

SUNDRE – The Sundre U9 Huskies White and Black squads might well have been buzzing after their annual home tournament this past weekend.

“It was an exciting weekend for Sundre hockey,” said Lee Martineau, Sundre U9 Huskies Black coach.

The action started on Friday, Feb. 7 at the Sundre Arena when the Huskies Black faced off against the Olds Grizzlys in the opening game.

Including the two hosting teams, there were eight squads altogether – the Olds Grizzlys, Cochrane Grizzlies, Sylvan Lake Gulls, Rocky Mountain House Jr. Rams, Lacombe Rockets and the Cochrane Golden Eagles.

“The tournament this past weekend was a fantastic success,” said Martineau.

Team White dominated their end of things, winning all three of their games, he said, adding team Black demonstrated admirable determination and managed to notch out two victories, “including an impressive 5-0 shutout to close out the tournament on Sunday night.”

Looking back over the past year, the coach beamed with pride.

“As we reflect on the season so far, it’s been nothing short of remarkable,” he said. “Watching these kids grow, learn, and come together as a team has been incredibly rewarding.”

Over the span of just a few short months, the Huskies’ “progress has been inspiring to all of us,” he said.

“They’ve learned to support one another both on and off the ice, and every single player has proven to themselves that they are capable of more than they ever thought possible.”

But 2024-25 division play in the Central Alberta Hockey League isn’t quite over yet and the coach looks forward to seeing “what the rest of the season holds.”

Martineau also praised the parent group responsible for organizing the event and said the volunteers “went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly,” along the way “creating an unforgettable experience for the players and families.”
