After a stellar performance at the 2013 55+ Alberta Winter Games Feb. 13-16, the Innisfail ladies carpet bowling team returned to the drop-in centre triumphant with bronze medals around their necks. 鈥淚t feels wonderful,鈥� said lead Denise Niegum.

Shooting towards the glass late on Friday, Feb. 15 in the sixth end against Notre Dame, Innisfail skip Courtney Rieberger launched a curling rock coming home with Sam Carr calling the line and Cassandra Livingstone and Jade Marshall sweeping.

The Central Alberta Amazons went down to Cowtown on the weekend and came back as first-round victors with a 3-1 win over the Calgary Warriors Feb. 2. 鈥淥verall we played well,鈥� said Amazons coach Doug Demott. 鈥淭he first game we had a slow start.

Despite losing three games to one in a best-of-five championship series, the Central Alberta Amazons have declared the 2012-2013 hockey season a success. "I couldn't be more proud of these girls," head coach Doug Demott said.

Amy Nixon, who threw third stones for the Shannon Kleibrink rink that earned a bronze medal for Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, was the keynote speaker at the wrap-up of the Olds Farmers and Farmerettes Bonspiel on Feb. 16.

The Olds College mixed curling team just couldn't make their last rock stick in extra ends and lost their bid for a bronze medal to Red Deer College 5-4 in the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC) 2013 championships on Feb. 24.

Thanks to a massive home win over the Grande Prairie Wolves on Feb. 22, the Olds College Broncos women's basketball team is heading to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conferences finals for the first time ever.

Plans for the upcoming provincial hockey championship to be hosted at the Innisfail Twin Arena the first weekend in April have begun to materialize.

On the night of Feb. 9, Jylisa Williams smashed an 18-year-old Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) single-game scoring record when she tallied 52 points against the Red Deer College Queens.

Mackenzie Ramsall has been recognized provincially for her achievements in track and field. The 15-year-old Innisfailian was nominated for Athletics Alberta's top female midget athlete (ages 14-15) for the year 2012.
