MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - More than a dozen firefighters from across the district were on hand for the official recognition of longtime retiring Cremona and District Emergency Services Chief Kevin Miller during a recent Mountain View County council meeting.
Miller was presented with a certificate and plaque during a brief ceremony.
He was with the department for more than a decade, starting as chief in 2015.
Reeve Angela Aalbers commended Miller for his “courage, leadership, firefighting expertise and hard work” during his time on the job.
“He has successfully led a team of dozens of firefighters, managed two fire halls (in Cremona and Water Valley), and overseen a fleet of eight capital fire apparatus,” said Aalbers.
“In his leadership capacity, he provided both stability and predictability during an historic time that involved numerous provincial wildfire deployments, the COVID-19 pandemic, and thousands of local responses and mutual aid calls.”
Aalbers also recognized Miller for his dedication to the department and its members.
“Mountain View County is forever grateful for his pragmatic approach to supporting regional fire efforts, including capital apparatus procurement, the implementation of Alberta first responders radio communication system, standardization of operating programs, and proactive strategies for FireSmart practices and emergency management preparation.
“It is his innovation, adaptability and, above all else, patience that made him an invaluable partner to Mountain View County.”
Miller plans to continue his current career with Calgary's fire department, council heard.
The county has hired Dorien Bibault as the new fire chief for Cremona and District Emergency Services.
“He comes to us with nearly 20 years of experience in the fire service, ranging from a volunteer firefighter role to his most recent role of deputy fire chief and acting fire chief with the 4 Wing Cold Lake National Defence Service,” Chris Atchison, director of legislative services, told the 51.
