OLDS 鈥� The Town of Olds has fixed 36 of 38 sewer system issues detected during tests last fall and is using advanced acoustic technology to detect any other leaks.
Vapour tests conducted last fall identified 38 repairs needed in the sewer system. Thirty-six have been repaired so far, the town announced March 26 in a relaese.
Those repairs mainly involved replacing manhole lids, inserts, and cleanout plugs at various locations.
Town staff are also tackling water loss in the community鈥檚 treated water lines which the news release says is 鈥渁 major concern.鈥�
鈥淭he aging underground infrastructure is the main reason for the water loss or ongoing repairs,鈥� the release says.
鈥淭his loss not only wastes treated water, but also puts undue pressure on the town's water and sewer infrastructure, resulting in additional costs.鈥�
That鈥檚 where the advanced acoustic technology comes in.
鈥淭his technology is more effective in detecting leaks than traditional methods. Even the smallest leaks are identified through this innovative approach,鈥� the news release says. 鈥淭esting is currently underway.鈥�
Town staff will continue to conduct inspections and repairs of manholes and mainlines through the coming months.
During a presentation to council on March 25, Adrian Pedro, the town鈥檚 infrastructure director, provided an update on the progress made in addressing water loss and inflow and infiltration (I&I).
He emphasized the importance of regular inspections, which have helped identify several issues.
"The town will see significant benefits in the long run through targeted testing and repairs," Pedro said in the release.
More than $1.5 million has been allocated toward water loss and I&I projects as part of the town鈥檚 $3.451 million capital budget.
鈥淎dministration will continue to prioritize targeted assessment practices to better inform future budgets to address required infrastructure repairs or replacements,鈥� the release says.
